Leaf deficiency charts...Jim, say that again: leaf deficiency charts rank as high in my hydroponic world as does pH. That sounds good Jim, but what in the heck are you talking about?

A leaf deficiency chart is an aid for taking the guesswork out of reading what's going on with your hydroponic plants. A chart, using photos or drawings, shows the visual condition of leaves and their reaction to nutrient levels, pH, disease, and water levels. When you grow stuff with hydroponics, it can go from “green to wilt” in a "blink of an eye." Your plants react very quickly to changes and you have to be on your toes to change the dynamics if necessary. Due to the diligent work of people far smarter than I and the wonder of the web, I am able to provide several good links to leaf deficiency charts. There are probably hundreds of charts in books and on web sites. I picked a few that I like.

I'm going to provide seven links below. First I want to reiterate that if you use commercially available liquid nutrients and a pH tester or kit (see my pH blog), and follow the directions, you will probably do quite well. If nutrition issues do arise, these charts can really be worth their weight in...seeds! If you use full natural / organic mixes or a home brew mix, then these charts are worth their weight in...many seeds!

I do not endorse any of these sites. I do not have any personal or commercial connection to them. I do not own, or claim to own, the links or their creative content. I do not take responsibility for where the link takes you to or it's content. If you reach a broken link, or a link that is fraudulent, dubious, misleading, or offensive, please contact me and I'll correct the issue.

These are cheap, easy tools that you can print out, bookmark, or put on your smart phone.

I don't seem to be able to link this directly; copy and paste into search. The link is now working -sort of.

“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.”
― Wendell Berry, The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture
